Safety in saleyards recognised with company award
Michael Carroll, Elders South West livestock manager in Bunbury has been recognised with the Company’s monthly One Elders Safety Award, for outstanding safety leadership over the key selling season within the branch and regional selling complex at Boyanup.
Working with, and providing leadership, to a team of up to 22 livestock staff, contractors and casuals, Mr Carroll has achieved a zero Loss Time Injury (LTI) result for the selling season.
Mr Carroll’s responsibilities also extend to being the Safety Action Team member for the Bunbury Hub where he consistently leads by example, bringing safety into general discussions, keeping things simple and to the point when talking safety, and promoting best practice amongst all departments.
“I’m very pleased to receive the One Elders Safety award, and it’s great to be recognised by others within the Elders network,” Mr Carroll says.
“I am fortunate in the Bunbury Hub to have a team behind me that take day to day safety responsibilities seriously. As the south west livestock manager and Bunbury Hub Safety Action Team (SAT) member, I know that myself and my team are exposed to many risks that if minimal care or awareness of safety is taken, can potentially result in a major accident or hazard,” he explained.
Annually, tens of thousands of cattle are sold in the South West (Bunbury/Manjimup) with approximately half of these through the saleyard system, including annual weaner and special female sales. Mr Carroll has also been responsible for multiple on farm bull sales, and has played a pivotal role in keeping all stakeholders safe during these sales.
Elders’ area manager for the South West, Simon Wilkinson says, “Michael has embraced the concept, reality and responsibility of safety throughout his career at Elders.
“Leading by example comes naturally for Michael. The team are exposed to many risks and his care and awareness of safety is taken seriously, especially in the saleyards working with cattle where they are so unpredictable,” Mr Wilkinson says.
In recognition of his award within the business, Mr Carroll will be invited to attend the annual One Elders awards in December, with the opportunity to win the overall safety performance award for 2017.
