The Week That Was – Beef Australia 2018
A sea of red and a crowd of friendly faces greeted guests to the Elders Pavilion at Beef Australia 2018 this month, where Rockhampton hosted approximately 100,000 producers, members of industry and livestock enthusiasts to learn and celebrate at Australia’s biggest beef event. With a large focus this year on changes affecting the industry, it was a perfect platform to announce new partnerships within the business and introduce technologies that are changing the way that Elders, and our clients, do business.
During the week Elders announced a new pilot partnership with Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) which will further collaboration between the two bodies to improve on-farm productivity across Queensland.
Of the partnership, Elders North Zone General Manager, Greg Dunne, said “having both MLA and Elders support each other by developing new research and innovative ideas alongside producers, and more importantly how best to apply that research on-farm will ultimately have a great benefit for our industry.”

Elders also showcased two more important relationships – with beyondblue and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, under the employee giving program Elders Give It. Attendees heard from beyondblue speaker Nikky Swanson about her experience with mental health and were educated on the work that beyondblue does to support people in rural locations. This message was well received for its timeliness and relevance during a challenging season for the north of Australia.
During the Elders client night, generous attendees and the efforts of Elders’ auctioneering team managed to raise over $21,000 for the RFDS through items kindly donated to the cause. Elders have a long history with the RFDS with branches across the country regularly supporting the cause each year, and a major sponsorship of RFDS Central Operations announced at the end of 2017 – you can read more here.
The Elders Pavilion also exhibited key suppliers who support the Elders service offering and product range throughout our retail outlets across the country. Zoetis, Bayer, Allflex, Coopers, Leicht’s CIA, Waratah, Tru Test, Olsson’s, Zee Tags, Bainbridge, Heritage Seeds, Jurox, FMC and Corteva Agriscience were all represented at the event, talking to clients about improving the productivity of their operations and maximising the results of on-farm activity.
Also new this year was information about Elders’ digital and online offerings which are growing significantly to help drive more efficiency in farming operations and the wider industry. Elders Online, which is designed for clients to easily access services, statements and invoices 24 hours a day, was represented in the Pavilion, as well as the improved Elders Red Notebook app – a tool that provides immediate and up to date access to key on-farm information and assistance.
Elders also hosted the latest in Virtual Reality (VR 360) technology, showcasing the potential uses in agriculture including livestock marketing and clearing sales. Of the new innovation, Elders National Livestock Manager, Chris Howie says that the initiative shows Elders investing in the future of the industry.
“We’re connecting buyers and sellers without them having to leave their own properties. With a 360 view, they can inspect the aspects most important to them, even when they’re thousands of miles away.”
“The technology gives buyers more confidence and control, and gives sellers access to a larger pool of buyers. It enables the buyer to view what they want to see, not what the agent or vendor thinks looks right.”

In addition to livestock and retail presence, Elders also had a strong representation from the Financial Services arm, with local and national Elders Agri Finance employees in attendance to demonstrate the personal approach to banking that the team pride themselves on, and representing the products of Elders’ distribution partners Rural Bank and StockCo.
Thank you to those who joined us at this year’s Beef Australia – see you in 2021!
