Elders Cootamundra’s Sam Gemmell claims top spot in ALPA National Young Auctioneers Competition

The best young auctioneers in the country went head to head today at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with Sam Gemmell, Elders Cootamundra taking out the prestigious national title of the Australian Livestock & Property Agents Association (ALPA) Young Auctioneer of the Year.

Originally from Dubbo NSW, Sam started with Elders as a livestock trainee in 2013 in Goulburn, before moving to Melbourne and finally to Cootamundra to complete the traineeship. Sam was then placed in Walcha as a full time Territory Sales Manager where he stayed for two and a half years before moving back to Cootamundra where he is today.

Sam will represent Australia at the International Livestock Auctioneers Competition at the Calgary Stampede, Canada.

Upon receiving the title, Sam says he got up and gave it his best shot.

“A massive thank you to all the sponsors of the competition and a huge thank you to Elders for the continued support towards my preparation for the competition and development not only as an auctioneer but as an agent.”

“To ALPA and all sponsors of the competition, thank you for making the competition what it is today, without the sponsors, none of this would be possible.

Sam says he has had a few personal mentors and agents who have helped him along the way, especially– Elders’ Peter Cox and Joe Wilks.

“I wouldn’t be the agent and auctioneer I am today without my father, Richard Gemmell – who also works for Elders as a Real Estate specialist.”

“I love getting up and representing clients, selling an article they have worked so hard to produce and trying to get the best possible price is a big rush,” he says.

Competitors are judged on diction, voice and manner, value of stock sold, as well as their presence and unique style.

The national competition saw four Elders auctioneers compete for the title; Jack Coleman (Elders Jamestown), Joe Allen (Elders Euroa) and Conor Lamond (Elders Jamestown).

The NSW State Finals were also held at the Sydney Royal Show today with Elders Dubbo’s Tom Pollard winning the NSW Young Auctioneer of the Year. Tom will represent Elders and NSW in next year’s national competition.
