Elders helps award-winning Auctioneer’s childhood dream become a reality

As a wide-eyed six-year-old boy standing beside his grandfather in the saleyards, Elders territory sales manager and award-winning auctioneer Joe Wilks dreamed of one day working for Elders.

Born and bred in Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of south-western New South Wales, Joe grew up on his family’s farm, and is the great grandson of local Wagga identity Jack ‘Grandboy’ Wilks: Wagga’s flood predictor and the namesake of Wilks Park on Travers Street in North Wagga.

Both Joe’s grandfather ‘Geoff’ and his Uncle ‘Geoff Junior’ worked for Elders while he was growing up, and Joe says it’s something he always wanted to do.

“I was brought up to help others and add value and I saw what Elders did for my family and our family farm,” Joe said.

“The local Elders Auctioneers were so professional – the best – but I never thought I’d be good enough to work for them.

“So, I practiced a lot and I’d watch the local Auctioneers in the ‘pink shirts’ in the saleyards. And I’d even line up my brother and sister on the farm and I’d be selling and they’d be buying.”

On road trips to visit family, Joe would also practice for hours in the car.

“I think I drove Mum crazy – I never stopped talking whole way there and the whole way back.”

But Joe’s dream, focus and practice has definitely paid off. In 2012, Joe competed in the State Auctioneering Championships and won. Then in 2013, he went on to win the coveted National Auctioneering Championships.

Joe is passionate about getting the best outcome for his clients and adding value to their business.

“It’s important to listen to your client’s story so you can truly understand what they do and want to achieve – and also appreciate their experience. I’m blessed – I’ve had great people around me and I love what I do.”

Joe lives in Wagga Wagga with his wife and two young children, and has worked for Elders for almost five years now, , and features in our Elders. Live it. television ads.

“As a senior auctioneer and livestock agent, I have accomplished a lot in my career already,” Joe said.

“My future goals are around continuing to add value for my clients, expanding my client base and building my career at Elders,” Joe said, “because in this game, if you want to be the best – Elders is the one.”
