Andrew Young’s focus on safety wins national award
Elders Townsville’s Farm Supplies Manager, Andrew Young has been commended with the annual One Elders Safety Award for commitment to safety in his branch and region.
After being notified by a transport company that six 20L drums of chemical had been lost in transportation between Katherine and Townsville, Mr Young followed required protocol, reporting the incident as per the Elders Critical Risk and Escalation Policy, then quickly put together an action recovery plan for the chemical.
With the help of his team mates, he managed to safely locate and secure all of the lost chemical, preventing what could be a potentially dangerous situation.
“I would really like to acknowledge and thank the team who helped handle this serious situation,” said Mr Young.
“The rapid recovery would not have been possible without the advisory support from the Safety and Risk Team and staff on the ground from Charters Towers, Richmond and Julia Creek who helped locate the drums which were spread over a significant distance.”
North Zone General Manager, Greg Dunne, says that Andrew’s efforts were commendable and a strong reflection of the priority that Elders puts on ensuring the safety of their employees at all times.
“We have managed to significantly reduce our lost time injury (LTI) rates in FY17, due to ongoing safety initiatives over the last few years,” says Mr Dunne.
“This focus has been received extremely well in the network, with many of our people going out of their way to change and implement policies and make sure everyone gets home safe at the end of the day,” he says.
“Andrew’s attitude is a great example of this focus on safety and how proactive action always stacks the odds in our favour for a positive outcome.”
