Elders Insurance’s own Mary-Jane Caldwell wins Mount Isa’s Australia Day citizen of the year

Local businesswoman and volunteer Mary-Jane Caldwell held back the tears as she accepted the ‘Citizen of the Year’ award at Mount Isa’s Australia Day celebrations.

Ms Caldwell agreed with Mayor Joyce McCulloch’s statement that she preferred to fly under the radar and get the job done.

“I endorse what Joyce said – I prefer being behind the scenes,” Ms Caldwell said.

“I do my work, I enjoy helping other people on committees or fundraising – if you don’t give you don’t receive.”

Cr McCulloch read out Ms Caldwell’s nomination which said she had been an active and passionate contributor to the Mount Isa community for over 25 years.

“Her enthusiasm for the arts, community service and local sport knows no bounds. She is a willing hand at fund raisers, a key organiser for the annual Mount Isa Eisteddfod and a member of the Mount Isa Regional Arts Development Fund committee. She is also an award-winning insurance agent for Elders Insurance,” the Mayor said.

“Mary-Jane challenges us all to contribute towards a better Mount Isa and is a worthy winner of this year’s Citizenship Award,” Cr McCulloch said

Having been in the insurance industry for twenty years, Mary-Jane Caldwell has come through the ranks of the business, working as a Sales Support Officer in Mount Isa prior to purchasing the business in 2012 and her Agency Development Manager Linda Johnson commented that she “epitomises the values of the Elders Insurance Agency business, she is a consummate professional”.

“Mary Jane is extremely active in the Mount Isa Region, with a significant list of community, educational, sports and arts involvement and accolades that highlight her commitment to her local community and her personal service focus.” Ms Johnson added.

“Mary-Jane has been recognised within the Elders Insurance business as an agent that looks to work with all areas of the business and for her relentless support to other agents. She is collaborative, altruistic in her offers of assistance and was recognised for her recent support of Mackay team following Tropical Cyclone Debbie, providing phone and claims lodgement and processing support  – making an incredible difference when it was needed most.

Mary-Jane is modest about her award and is just looking forward to getting on with business. Her commitment to customer service, firmly believing that once a person becomes a client of her agency, they become part of the Elders Insurance family is testament to her caring approach.
