Applications reopen for 2018 Elders Traineeship Program

Passionate about Agriculture? Then look no further than the 2018 Elders Traineeship Program.

Now in its sixth year, the Elders Traineeship Program provides practical and realistic on-the-ground training and mentoring for the next generation of stock and station agents from experience within the country-wide Elders network.

The Program focuses on developing skills and knowledge through the provision of valuable, hands-on experience, online learning programs and face-to-face workshops concentrating on the Stock and Station industry.

With this year’s first round of trainees already in the field, Elders is on the hunt for its next group eager to make their mark in Australian agriculture.

Once such champion is Sara Graffunder, an eight-month veteran of the Elders Traineeship Program.

Originally hailing from a sugar cane farm close to Mackay, Queensland, Sara was initially attracted to apply for the Elders Traineeship Program after spotting an online advertisement for the initiative.

“I first became aware of the Elders Traineeship Program last year when a Facebook ad caught my eye. After some further research, I decided this was the opportunity for me. Having initially played with the idea of giving up my accountancy job and relocating to a cattle station in west Queensland, I instead decided to apply for the Traineeship Program and the rest, as they say, is history.”

From Dalby to Inverell, Roma to Blackall – where she is currently based – it’s been a whirlwind few months for Sara, crisscrossing New South Wales and Queensland in the pursuit of unique, on-the-job work experiences.

“Since I began the Traineeship Program in late October 2017, every single day has been different. The breadth of experience I’ve been lucky enough to gain so far, has been truly incredible. When I started the program, I could never have imagined it would provide me with as much variety and adventure as it already has.

“As someone who began their career in accountancy, I never expected I would be exposed to – or have the opportunity to gain – such valuable experiences, across so many different areas of agriculture.

“Having initially looked to leverage my financial experience with the Elders Banking team in Dalby and Inverell, I quickly discovered my interests lay elsewhere – namely the livestock yards. With no previous experience of working with cattle or sheep, I found this aspect of the program the most fascinating and rewarding.

“Despite being initially recruited for the program on the strength of my financial and accounting background, I quickly realised my passion lay outside the office. Thankfully, Chris and Simone – my mentors at Elders – were extremely supportive, and encouraged me to follow my passion by providing helpful advice and practical opportunities to further my exposure to the livestock industry.

“Throughout my four placements so far, I’ve been blown away by the friendliness and approachability of everyone I’ve encountered. It’s been a breath of fresh air to meet, work and build relationships with such a passionate and dedicated group of people.

“From the Elders team in Adelaide to those on the ground in the local communities where I’ve been based, my journey has been shaped and influenced by the personalities I’ve met and worked with, so much so, they almost feel like family.”
