Andrew Young commended with Safety Award

Elders Townsville’s Farm Supplies Manager, Andrew Young has been commended with the Company’s monthly One Elders Safety Award following his attention to detail and quick thinking in a potentially dangerous situation.

After being notified by a third party transport company that six 20 litre drums of an harmful agricultural chemical had been lost by the transporter between Katherine and Townsville, Mr Young followed required protocol, reporting the incident as per the Elders Critical Risk and Escalation Policy, then quickly put together a recovery plan for the chemical.

With the assistance of Richmond farm supplies rep, Colleen Rae, the pair scoured the 300km stretch of road twice in an attempt to locate the missing drums.

Using initiative, Mr Young provided a number of road workers throughout the area with photo descriptions and safety data so the workers would not be harmed by the chemical should they come in to contact.

Hours of searching led to two drums being located on the day. Mr Young prepared himself in PPE equipment and proceeded to secure the drums to transport to Elders Richmond.

Over the following several days, with the assistance of road workers and Elders’ employees from Julia Creek, Richmond and Elders Charters Towers, the remaining drums were located and recovered.

“This was an unfortunate situation but we were determined to locate and recover these drums. Through a coordinated effort, we got the result we needed in the end and I thank everyone involved for their assistance,” Mr Young said.

Mr Young also explained, “safety is the number one priority in the Elders network and it’s important we are aware of potential risks in all situations.”

“This was a great outcome and I’m pleased to have been recognised for leading the recovery effort, although it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from a number of front line staff, as well as our safety and risk business partner, Al Smythe. It really was a team effort.” Mr Young said

Greg Dunne, Elders’ north zone general manager, says Mr Young is very deserving of the award for his actions that day.

“One Elders Awards recognise team members that have gone above and beyond their usual roles and responsibilities. Andrew’s quick thinking and diligence provided a successful and safe outcome for all stakeholders,” Mr Dunne said.

Mr Young’s safety award provides the opportunity to attend the Elders annual awards night in Adelaide this December, and puts him in the running to win the overall national safety award amongst other high-performers from across the country.
