Research trials prove worth in scientifically backed herbicide management plan

Herbicide resistance researcher and industry leader in weed management best practice, Dr Peter Boutsalis, has recently been involved in assessing an important herbicide and one of Elders’ most popular products, Roundup DURA®, in trials conducted by Plant Science Consulting.

The research comes at a critical time for clients planning their pre-emergent strategy who are ensuring their crops are best prepared for the season ahead.

The study’s primary finding demonstrated that Roundup DURA herbicide resulted in a superior level of wild oats control in comparison with a leading 540 g/L glyphosate formulation.

Each were assessed in pot trials to investigate the efficacy of equivalent gram active ingredient rates.

The trial replicated outdoor field conditions and herbicide application and assessed biomass reduction at 14 DAT and 28 DAT and also survival of the wild oats after treatment.

Dr. Boutsalis said the greater biomass reduction was observed with Roundup DURA at the 14 DAT mark, although both treatments were similar at 24 DAT.

“This indicates that the action of Glyphosate 540 was slower than the Roundup® product,” Dr Boutsalis said.

“Although the biomass reduction was similar, survival was not, with the greatest survival of wild oats observed with Glyphosate 540.”

The trial included rates of 800 and 1600g ai/ha and some wild oats survived the herbicide application.

“Even at 1600g ai/ha 40 percent of wild oats treated with Glyphosate 540 were recovering and biomass would have been significantly greater,” Dr Boutsalis said.

The trial results demonstrate the benefits of the proprietary surfactant system available in Roundup DURA.

Superior surfactant allows the herbicide to rapidly penetrate and quickly translocate within the leaves of weeds for fast and effective control.

While the active ingredient rates were the same for both products, it was Roundup DURA that demonstrated quicker biomass reduction and greater control of wild oats.

Roundup DURA also has a range of other benefits including one hour rainfastness on the label, one hour application prior to sowing, high flow formulation across all conditions and compatibility with a range of tank mixes.

Dr Boutsalis said it was important to achieve as much control as possible when targeting weed species in the paddock.

“Spraying is an expensive venture, so you want to do it once and you want to do it correctly,” he said.

“If you have to come back again because of product failure then you’ve wasted a lot of energy, a lot of time and a lot of money.  Usually what’s happened is those plants have actually grown a lot more so they are more difficult to kill and they’ve extracted valuable moisture and nutrients from the ground.”
