Stud stock season set for a flying start in Western Australia
WA field days are just around the corner and with that marks the start of the stud ram season.
State stud stock manager Tim Spicer provides insight into how the season is shaping up from his team on the ground.
After a hiatus from field days caused by Covid-19 restrictions, Tim says that he is looking forward to welcoming them back in 2021. Elders are major contributors and sponsors at all major events across the state and are involved in over 76 ram sales.
From Esperance in the south, to Northampton in the Midwest, Tim says things are looking very promising.
“Seasonal conditions across Western Australia are favourable, even though a large number of breeding ewes left the state in the dry season,” he says.
“Early favourable seasonal conditions have had a positive effect on condition and size of potential sale teams for the up and coming stud sales.”
“The above average lambing percentages are also a real positive out of this good season.”
“The positives of the WA sheep industry are historically high meat prices, and a wool price that is returning back to pre-covid highs.”
With the reduction in sheep numbers in WA due to the drought, both processors and exporters will be very competitive. The supply and demand should have a positive effect on meat prices and wool prices going into the spring.
“We will kick off with Narrogin Long Wool Day on 6 August, followed closely by Mingenew Expo, WA Merino Field Days, Katanning Sheep Show & Sale and Dowerin Field Days, with Newdegate Machinery Field Days held in the first week in September,” says Tim.
“It’s a busy few weeks!”
“These events are a really good opportunity for buyers to see what they can expect from top studs across WA.”
